They’re clear, they’re actionable - and they help you identify your strengths and weaknesses.
All of which means you can start optimising towards your ultimate goals.
Want to hit the ground running with the User Needs Model 2.0? At smartocto, we make it simple. We now offer baseline reports. These are something we’ve invested heavily in because years of experience has taught us that they’re the single most powerful analytics resource a newsroom can have in its arsenal.

All of which means you can start optimising towards your ultimate goals.
Above is a chart from a baseline report by Der Spiegel. In this report, we tagged and categorised the articles using our AI tool, which allowed us to conduct a reliable baseline analysis based on the four drivers: fact, context, emotion and action.
Below, you can see what becomes possible once an editorial team has seriously started implementing the user needs model and applies its own tagging on user needs. At that point, we can analyse performance across all eight user needs, or even more in theory, to identify where a newsroom’s strengths and weaknesses lie.
Simply put, they’re a snapshot of where you are right now.
What kinds of articles resonate best with your audience? Are there areas you’re overproducing content? Not producing enough? Where are you wasting resources? Where are the areas of untapped potential?
We analyse a minimum of 1k articles and the report is personally overseen by one of our user needs experts. The analytics might be powered by our data analytics, but the analysis and actions are human-powered. It’s the best of both worlds.
Just drop us a message! It’s that simple.
Great question.
The baseline report is just the start. With it, you’ll be able to identify areas for optimisation - and areas for improvement.
We recommend using the baseline report to run growth hacks - and conveniently we’ve just published a super-useful resource on how to make these work (you may have come here from reading that!).
